The first Ingmar Bergman International Theatre Festival in 2009 focused almost exclusively on Bergman’s own oeuvre. The programme included guest theatre companies’ interpretations of Cries and Whispers and From the Life of the Marionettes, and readings of Through a Glass Darkly. Productions that were not based on Bergman scripts were selected for the Festival programme on the grounds that they reflected the emphasis on strong personal expression with a focus on acting. MITOS21, the European theatre network to which Dramaten belongs, gathered in a collective theatre project, The Obama Victory Speech. The Festival was widely embraced by the public and the media – obviously, Sweden had been yearning for an international theatre festival.
